When the love of her life left without any explanation, Annabeth Winfield moved on despairingly, knowing she'd never have a love as thrilling as her first ever again. Sloane Rutherford was roguish and daring, but as Annabeth grew up, she realized that their reckless romance was just a passing adventure, never meant for stability. Twelve years later, Annabeth is engaged to someone new, ready to start her life with a dependable man.
That's when Sloane returns. And he brings with him a serious warning: Annabeth is in trouble.
After spending the past dozen years working as a spy, Sloane thought he'd left espionage behind him. But now a dangerous blackmailer is after Annabeth. Sloane offers to hide his former lover at Stonecliffe, the Rutherford estate, but stubborn Annabeth demands to be part of the investigation. As the two embark on a dangerous and exciting journey, memories of their past romance resurface. Sloane and Annabeth aren't the wide-eyed children they used to be, but knowing they're wrong for each other makes a nostalgic affair seem very right...

A former spy risks his cold heart to protect the woman he never forgot in bestseller Camp’s immersive second Stonecliffe Regency romance (after An Affair at Stonecliffe). Sloane Rutherford is blackmailed into agreeing to spy for the Crown to prevent his beloved Annabeth Winfield from learning that her father is a traitor working for the French. Twelve years after this intrigue abruptly ended their affair, Sloane has a successful business in London—until his warehouse burns down. He initially believes his business rival is responsible, and fears the man will target Annabeth next, because she’s still the thing he cares about most in the world. Annabeth, now engaged to the very proper Nathan Dunbridge, is shocked when Sloane reappears in her life to protect her and is distrustful of his concern, believing he callously abandoned her. The danger to Annabeth increases when she and her maid Judy are kidnapped, but the two manage to escape, and Sloane learns that “Judy” is really Verity, a fellow spy hired to find a supposed confession written by Annabeth’s late father before he died. As the mystery escalates, attraction sizzles and romantic angst mounts between the leads. Readers will be hooked. Agent: Maria Carvainis, Maria Carvainis Agency. -

Twelve years ago, in an effort to shield Annabeth Winfield from her father's treachery, Sloane Rutherford was blackmailed into a life of smuggling and spying. To save Annabeth from further scandal, Sloane surrendered any chance of a future together and cut her from his life completely. Though she grieved for her sudden and unexplained loss of love, Annabeth has finally moved on after more than a decade. When she and her maid are the target of a kidnapping plot, however, it becomes clear that Sloane has not spared Annabeth from danger. Joining forces to identify the enemy, they uncover a web of immorality and intrigue the likes of which they never imagined. In her second "Stonecliffe" novel, Camp (An Affair at Stonecliffe) presents an exhilarating enemies-to-lovers Regency romance. Readers' hearts will surely be racing, either from the adventurous antics or alluring intimacy. Lush detail and a large, likable cast of characters round out the enchanting narrative. VERDICT This book will appeal to readers seeking a fetching, fast-paced historical romance full of devotion and derring-do. Recommended for fans of Madeline Hunter, Mary Balogh, and Sabrina Jeffries.--Lauren Hackert

In A Rogue at Stonecliffe, Candace Camp takes readers on a wild adventure full of romance and suspense in Regency England. More than a decade ago, the love of Annabeth Winfield’s life left without a word. Forced to wonder if she made it all up in her head, Annabeth begrudgingly attempted to get on with her life. She clearly didn’t mean as much to Sloane Rutherford as he meant to her. With time, Annabeth finds herself engaged to the perfectly fine, albeit a little boring, Nathan. So naturally, that’s when Sloane returns, warning Annabeth that she is in trouble. Sloane has actually spent the last decade as a spy and is attempting to leave that life behind him when a ruthless, anonymous blackmailer threatens Annabeth. He is desperate to keep her safe, but the plucky Annabeth is not about to let Sloane lock her in a parlor. As the stakes increase and the two find themselves constantly together while trying to stop the blackmailer, old feelings rise to the surface and they wonder if there isn’t a bit of unfinished business between them. A cornerstone of the historical romance subgenre with a mile-long backlist, Camp knows a thing or two about creating compelling characters. While the blackmailing plotline is often confusing, the love story is on point. The chemistry between Sloane and Annabeth absolutely crackles, and it’s perfectly believable that, despite being separated for a decade, these two would still be head over heels for each other. Folks who love a Regency romance rife with palpable sexual tension and intrigue will have a wonderful time reading A Rogue at Stonecliffe.
