"This is a delight." —Publishers Weekly on The Hate Project
A secret crush leads to a not-so-secret romance in this delightful romantic comedy from Kris Ripper
There are three things you need to know about Preston "PK" Harrington the third:
  • He's a writer, toiling in obscurity as an editorial assistant at a New York City publishing house.
  • He is not a cliché. No, really.
  • He's been secretly in love with his best friend, Art, since they once drunkenly kissed in college.
  • When Art moves in with PK following a bad breakup, PK hopes this will be the moment when Art finally sees him as more than a friend. But Art seems to laugh off the very idea of them in a relationship, so PK returns to his writing roots—in fiction, he can say all the things he can't say out loud.
In his book, PK can be the perfect boyfriend.
Before long, it seems like the whole world has a crush on the fictionalized version of him, including Art, who has no idea that the hot new book everyone's talking about is PK's story. But when his brilliant plan to win Art over backfires, PK might lose not just his fantasy book boyfriend, but his best friend.

This queer friends-to-lovers romance from Ripper (the Love Study series) tackles the thorny realities of grand romantic gestures. Preston “PK” Kingsley can’t finish any of his writing projects. He also can’t figure out how to tell his best friend, Art, that he’s been in love with them since one drunken kiss in college five years ago. When Art is left heartbroken and homeless after a breakup, PK offers them his spare room. Living together redoubles PK’s frustration with his bottled feelings, but cures his writer’s block as he pens his idealized version of their love story. He publishes the novel under a pen name and it blows up, but any hope PK has that Art will see it for the love confession it is backfires when he reveals himself as the author—and Art as his muse—at his first reading. Art is anything but thrilled. To win them back, PK will have to try something he’s so far avoided: straightforward communication. Ripper subtly unpacks romance tropes, homing in on the importance of consent on both sides of a crush. Though PK’s pining behavior grows frustrating, the witty, eccentric supporting cast serves as the story’s moral compass. This insightful new angle on the dos and don’ts of love confessions shines. Agent: Courtney Miller-Callihan, Handspun Literary.

Preston Kingsley "PK" Harrington III never forgot the drunken kiss he shared with his best friend, Art, five years ago, but since then, Art has never once indicated that he shares the romantic feelings PK has. However, when Art dumps his boyfriend and accepts PK's offer to temporarily move in with him, PK thinks this might be his chance. Unfortunately, Art seems content to keep things in the friend zone, leaving PK to channel all of his romantic feelings for Art into his work-in-progress novel. When PK's manuscript is snapped up by an editor at the New York City publishing house where he works, he is thrilled. That is, until PK realizes that once Art reads the book, he just might realize that his best friend wants nothing more than to be his boyfriend for real. Fans of bookish romcoms will especially enjoy Ripper's (Life Revamp, 2021) latest wonderfully inclusive and sweet friends-to-lovers story with its newly minted author protagonist who exhibits all the goofy romantic charm of Hugh Grant at his cinematic best.
