Vaughn delights with another rousing adventure featuring an aging Robin Hood’s rambunctious children. Set four years after The Ghosts of Sherwood, Robin of Locksley and his family attend the coronation of King Henry III, who is inheriting the throne from King John at the age of 13. Robin encourages his children—romantic Mary, misfit John, and brilliant, nonverbal Eleanor—to befriend the boy king, sending them to pledge their fealty and stay in the castle. Their subsequent antics include an archery competition, sneaking out of the palace at night to climb trees, and a wild chase across the palace grounds as they discover the beginnings of a political conspiracy. The story is fast-paced and fun, with much of the pleasure lying in the Vaughn’s charming and distinct characterizations of the Locksley siblings. Most impressive is Vaughn’s handling of the nonverbal Eleanor, who never feels forgotten or left out in scenes. Readers won’t have to know much about the Robin Hood legends to be swept up in this quick, entertaining tale. Agent: Seth Fishman, the Gernert Company.
