Amanda Leigh Cobb has plenty of opportunity to show a range of emotions in this audiobook. Oraya, as a child, was adopted by a vampire king and was taught to fear everyone except her father. She enters a legendary tournament, which is designed to have one survivor. Forced to form an alliance; she chooses her fiercest competitor, Raihn, a ruthless vampire who is a threat to her father's throne. Cobb captures the atmosphere of fear and brutality in which Oraya has been raised. Cobb imbues her with a wary innocence in the beginning, which becomes more wary and less innocent as the story progresses. With equal facility, Cobb manages scenes that range from moments of grief to brutal violence, from witty repartee to fiery lovemaking. J.E.M. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine
