It's 1966, and George Parker, a reclusive teenager with a bright mind and a vivid imagination, is facing a boring summer in Eden, South Carolina, an oak-shrouded riverside town with magic seeping from the cracks and fissures of its peaceful antebellum faç ade. George has resigned himself to battling boredom with his faithful dog, Buster, a box of comic books, his bike, Lightning, and a fishing rod, but plans change when Gerard Free moves into the decaying old mansion next door. A handsome, flamboyant outsider with bad habits and mysterious secrets, Mr. Free, who claims he can talk to the moon, is on a mission to recover the soul of his dead lover. As summer unfolds, George defies his parents to assist Mr. Free in his quest, embarking on an adventure that includes a crazy flying ghost; the enchanting music of the big bands; odd neighbors who are far more than the eye reveals; and a beautiful girl, who is forbidden in George's world.

Grades 9-12 "I'd been loathing the approach of another lonely, boring summer," thinks 14-year-old George, but that's before he meets an elegant, eccentric neighbor; a ghost; a comatose man who lives in two dimensions; a beautiful 16-year-old girl; and a burly new boy in town who becomes a fast friend. In short, there is magic in Eden, George's small Southern town, beginning with that eccentric neighbor, Mr. Free, who is painting a portrait of Jolie, his lost love. The ghost may be connected to Mr. Free. The comatose man is Pug Ginn, whose older sister is George's bte noire. The burly boy is good-natured Lee Roy. And the girl is Iris, and George is smitten. However, she's mixed race, and it's the South in 1966. The chances of George having a relationship with her are slim, but will love find a way? Howell's enchanting, good-humored novel has agreeable elements of fantasy, friendship, and love. It's well written, and there is sentimentality here, though not obtrusively so. The novel could have been published adult; it's a crossover--but one to treasure.
