Someone is trying to kill Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Esteemed aunt of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, generous patroness of Mr. William Collins, a woman of rank who rules over the estate of Rosings Park with an unimpeachable sense of propriety—who would dare? Lady Catherine summons her grand-nephew, Mr. Jonathan Darcy, and his investigative companion, Miss Juliet Tilney, to find out.
After a year apart, Jonathan and Juliet are thrilled to be reunited, even if the circumstances—finding whoever has thus far sabotaged Lady Catherine's carriage, shot at her, and nearly pushed her down the stairs—are less than ideal. Also less than ideal: their respective fathers, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy and Mr. Henry Tilney, have accompanied the young detectives to Rosings, and the two men do not interact with the same felicity enjoyed by their children.
With attempts against Lady Catherine escalating, and no one among the list of prime suspects seemingly capable of committing all of the attacks, the pressure on Jonathan and Juliet mounts—even as more gentle feelings between the two of them begin to bloom. The race is now on to provoke two confessions: one from the attempted murderer before it is too late—and one, perhaps, of love.

Violence and romance collide in Gray’s bewitching third Jane Austen–inspired whodunit (after The Late Mrs. Willoughby). Jonathan Darcy (son of Pride and Prejudice’s Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet) and Juliet Tilney (daughter of Northanger Abbey’s Henry Tilney) have twice joined forces to solve murder cases. Now, they receive a summons from Jonathan’s great-aunt, the formidable Lady Catherine de Bourgh. While Lady Catherine largely disapproves of Jonathan’s undignified sleuthing, she needs his help to prevent a murder—hers. Three attempts have recently been made on her life, including a bullet through her window, a deliberate traffic accident, and a stranger pushing her over a banister. As Jonathan and Juliet set about determining who in Lady Catherine’s rarefied circle might have reason to take her out, they battle simmering resentments between their fathers, who’ve accompanied them to Lady Catherine’s estate. Meanwhile, the young sleuths’ romantic feelings for each other continue to develop, to their families’ dismay. Gray again evokes the wit and atmosphere of an Austen novel while serving up a mystery that will stump even the most seasoned armchair detectives. This series deserves a long life. Billie Fulford-Brown's performance makes Claudia Gray's third venture into Austenland first-rate listening. Having previously revealed the killers of Mr. Wickham and the late Mrs. Willoughby, Jonathan Darcy and Juliet Tilney are summoned to Rosings Park, where several attempts have been made on Lady Catherine De Bourgh's life. Both their fathers agree to accompany them, but neither approves of their sleuthing nor their continued companionship. As the mystery unfolds, tender feelings between Jonathan and Juliet grow, and Fulford-Brown does it all to near perfection. She delivers the sharp tongue of the irascible Lady Catherine, the cleverness and quick wit of Juliet, and the bewildering awkwardness of Jonathan. Fulford-Brown's subtlety and nuance add credibility to every scene, offering a treat for both Austen fans and mystery lovers. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine -

Gray's delightful third entry in the Jane Austen-inspired "Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney" series (following The Late Mrs. Willoughby) finds amateur sleuth Juliet Tilney at Rosings Park, the home of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy's meddling aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Listeners meet Mr. Darcy, his wife, Elizabeth, and their son, Jonathan, who has been summoned by Lady Catherine to find out who wants her dead. They'll also learn how Elizabeth's childhood friend, Charlotte, is faring as wife to pitiful Mr. Collins. Juliet is reunited with Jonathan to get to the bottom of the mystery, thus reopening the door to love with her fellow detective if all goes well. The two are well-matched, but their fathers do not recognize how their progeny are evolving into more complex personages. Narrator Billie Fulford-Brown offers a sparkling performance, perfectly communicating the nuances of Jonathan and Juliet's personalities. Gray's lively dialogue is conveyed with vivacity and wit. VERDICT Whodunit buffs will enjoy this witty romp and marvel at how the author has woven plausible outcomes, eras later, for the heroines Austen carefully crafted. Gray doesn't miss a beat to complicate matters for her sleuthing, would-be lovers and leaves listeners eager for more.--Sharon Sherman
