Dez Limerick, a man of many skills and a murky past, faces the impossible-a skilled, deadly opponent who anticipates his every move in James Byrne's Chain Reaction.
Desmond Aloysius Limerick ("Dez" to his friends and close personal enemies) is a man with a shadowy past, certain useful hard-won skills, and, if one digs deep enough, a reputation as a good man to have at your back. He was trained as a "gatekeeper"—he can open any door, keep it open as long as necessary, and control who does—and does not—go through. Now retired from his previous life, Dez still tries to keep his skills up to date.
Knocking around the country, picking up the occasional gig as a guitarist, Dez is contacted by a friend in urgent need of his musical skills. At his behest, Dez flies to the East Coast to a gig at the brand new massive complex, the Liberty Center. But he's barely landed before he finds himself in the midst of a terrorist attack, a group has taken over the whole center and thousands of hostage lives are in danger. With the semi-willing help of a talented thief, Dez takes on the impossible task of outfighting and outwitting a literal army. But that's just the beginning, as Dez learns he was actually lured there under false pretenses, by someone who knows more about Dez, his past and his skills than any living person should.

In his previous life, Dez Limerick was a gatekeeper, trained to covertly open locked doors and keep them open as long as necessary. Now, at 35, he's retired, living in California, and taking occasional gigs as a bass player and pianist. When a friend needs his musical skills, he flies to Newark, NJ, to help a band inaugurate a new convention complex. As Dez explores the Liberty Center, he notices a number of men armed with Russian rifles. He's just settled into a martini bar when there's an announcement that a Russian terrorist group has taken over the convention center, and they'll kill anybody who tries to escape. Dez sees a couple killed before he decides to take on the terrorists. He teams up with a thief, and together they thwart the terrorists' plans. But someone seems to know just what Dez will do. When he recognizes that several victims were not shot with Russian weapons, he turns the information over to the FBI. Will it be enough to stop the plan that's now steamrolling along? VERDICT Byrne's sequel to Deadlock is a fast-paced, explosive thriller with a charming hero, Russian terrorists on U.S. soil, high-stakes money schemes, and a worthy opponent.--Lesa Holstine

Dez Limerick, whose past is shrouded in mystery, has been living a nomadic life, moving around the country with no real plan. His latest temporary job: filling in for a bass guitarist at a concert in Newark, New Jersey. But, wouldn't you know, Dez has scarcely arrived before he's caught up in a terrorist attack, and suddenly it's Dez against an entire army--a very well-armed, well-trained army. Unlike many literary action heroes, Dez isn't meant to be taken entirely seriously (see, for example, his full name: Desmond Aloysius Limerick), and his adventures are deliberately, delightfully larger-than-life. The Limerick novels--The Gatekeeper (2022), Deadlock (2023), and now Chain Reaction--aren't comedies, but there are laughs in them; they aren't spoofs, but there are nods to other action heroes; and they aren't wall-to-wall action, but they are thrilling and suspenseful. This one can easily be read as a stand-alone, but once readers have finished it they'll almost certainly want to read the others, so libraries should plan for demand for the earlier titles.COPYRIGHT(2024) Booklist, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
